Building Warehouse Location Labels

A location code has to make sense to a person walking the floor and to the software tracking it — that's the whole trick.

A structure that tends to work well:

Aisle – Bay – Level – Bin

So something like:

read that string and you already know exactly where the item sits, no separate lookup table required.

Why Code 128 for Warehouse Barcodes

WareStat uses Code 128 for the machine-readable side of things.

It's a solid fit for internal warehouse IDs specifically because it handles letters, numbers and most printable characters — unlike retail formats like EAN, which come with much tighter structural rules built for consumer products, not internal logistics. It's also just the format most warehouse tooling defaults to for SKUs, bins, racks and locations.

that prints as both large readable text and a scannable Code 128 barcode, side by side. Keeping the text visible matters more than it might seem — a scanner isn't always in hand, and sometimes a worker just needs to eyeball the location before committing to it.

Printing in Bulk

Nobody running a large warehouse should be creating labels one click at a time — that doesn't scale, and it shouldn't have to.

Paste straight from Excel, Google Sheets, or similar, using this layout:

A CSV upload works the same way. Each row turns into its own label, and the Copies field handles printing the same one multiple times without repeating the row.

Genuinely useful when you're relabeling a section, standing up a new picking zone, or just need a big batch of pallet and storage labels done in one pass.

Generating an Entire Location Series Automatically

The Location Series tool can spin up hundreds of structured locations without you touching each one.

Set:

  • Aisles: A to C
  • Bays: 01 to 04
  • Levels: 01 to 03
  • Bins: 01 to 02

and it produces the full set — things like:

Separator style and numeric padding are both adjustable before you generate anything.

Printer and Paper Flexibility

It's not locked to one printer or page size. Supported presets include:

  • A4 sheets
  • US Letter
  • 100 × 50 mm thermal labels
  • 75 × 40 mm thermal labels
  • 100 × 150 mm thermal labels
  • fully custom dimensions

Plus common preset sizes like 101 × 152 mm warehouse labels and the usual Avery sheet-label dimensions.

WareStat works out on its own how many labels fit per page, in both directions, and how many pages the whole batch needs. That said — always run a small test batch first and check the physical alignment before committing to a run of a few hundred. Printer scaling has a way of quietly drifting.

Making Rack and Bin Labels Actually Readable

A label only does its job if it's readable from wherever it's actually going to be read.

A shelf label viewed up close has completely different requirements than a rack location someone needs to spot from several meters down an aisle — treating them the same is a mistake.

For rack labels specifically, bump up the font on the main code and move to a larger label size. Emphasizing large, readable location text alongside the barcode — not instead of it — is standard practice for exactly this reason.

Arrows and Zone Colors

Sometimes an identifier alone isn't quite enough to help someone find a spot fast.

Optional directional arrows are available:

← Left → Right ↑ Up ↓ Down

And a configurable color stripe can mark zones, departments, temperature areas, picking zones, or whatever internal categories matter to your operation.

One thing worth keeping in mind: color should support the identifier, never replace it. The text-based location code stays the actual source of truth.

Exporting to Zebra ZPL

For Zebra-compatible thermal printers, WareStat can export the whole batch as ZPL directly.

Pick either:

203 dpi or 300 dpi

then download the file. No need to convert every label into an image first — it's a direct path from data to printer. Standard browser printing is still there too, for laser, inkjet or PDF workflows.
