How to Use a Discount & Sale Price Calculator: A Quick Guide

The purpose of sales signs is to get you moving quickly. Because most people do not stop to perform the math, a large “30% OFF” sticker helps. You can do it both ways with this calculator.

The typical use is simple. The sale price shows instantly when you enter the original price and select a discount %, either by inputting your own or using one of the quick presets. It has a straightforward formula:

Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100) Saved Amount = Original Price − Sale Price

Thus, a $120 jacket is only $90 after a 25% discount. You save thirty dollars. Verification takes two seconds.

The computation is reversed in the second manner. Both prices are already known to you: the retailer says it was $130, but the sticker says $79.99. The calculator will display the real discount percentage if you enter both:

Discount% = (Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price × 100

Instead of the “almost half off” that the banner claimed, that is 38.5%. It is worth knowing.

Additionally, there is an optional tax field. Because a good deal can look different at the register than it did on the shelf, the calculator displays the true out-of-pocket cost after tax when you add your local rate.
